Abstract Submissions for the ISES-ISEE 2018 Joint Annual Meeting
The ISES-ISEE 2018 Joint Annual Meeting will highlight issues that reflect the complexities in environmental exposure and health research and policy development. You are invited to submit an abstract if your work investigates complexities in exposure and health from very big (macro/ecosystem) to very small (micro/molecular) environments. For more information on the conference themes and details on how to submit an abstract, please click here. The deadline to submit an abstract is April 3, 2018. Note that this deadline is firm and will NOT be extended.
2018 ISES-ISEE is Going Green
In an effort to minimize the carbon footprint of the joint annual meeting, we are proud to highlight the environmentally friendly aspects of our conference. The Shaw Conference Center is a Gold Certified Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) facility offering green initiatives in food, energy, and maintenance. The conference program will be easily accessible via phone and tablet app. We hope conference attendees will take advantage of these paperless options; however, paper programs will also be available at an extra cost. The menu at the conference dinner, held at the beautiful National Arts Centre, will be locally-sourced and sustainable. We encourage attendees to also consider the environment when making their hotel and travel choices. The Westin Ottawa offers options for conserving water and energy, and will plant a tree if you “Make a Green Choice” when making a reservation. When registering for the meeting, you can opt to purchase carbon offsets that will help fund carbon-reducing projects. We are taking steps to mitigate our environmental impact and appreciate your support in doing so.
ISEE Advocacy at Work
Lead poisoning is a globally prevalent condition, however it is one of the most preventable environmental hazards. In September 2015, ISEE joined the call to eliminate lead poisoning globally by publishing a 5-point plan in Epidemiology. The commentary was titled “ISEE Call for Action for Global Control of Lead Exposure to Eliminate Lead Poisoning.”
ISEE’s statement on lead has now been translated into French and is available at the
ISEE Appelle à l’Action.

Meet ISEE’s 2017 Award Winners
ISEE recognizes significant contributions to environmental epidemiology by both experienced environmental epidemiologists and promising new researchers. The 2017 awardees were honored at the ISEE 29th Annual Conference in Sydney, Australia on September 24-28, 2017. To learn more about the awardees, click here.
Call for Award Nominations
The ISEE Awards Committee is soliciting nominations by April 27, 2018. There are awards for people at different career stages. For instance, the John Goldsmith Award for Outstanding Contributions to Environmental Epidemiology recognizes senior scientists who serve as models of excellence in research, unwavering promotion of environmental health, and integrity. The Tony McMichael Mid-Term Career Award recognizes a mid-career scientist (more than 5 years past their doctoral degree) who has pursued innovative, independent research in environmental epidemiology. The Rebecca James Baker Award recognizes graduate students and new investigators who are within three years of having completed their degree and are beginning to make contributions to the field. There is also the Research Integrity Award that honors an environmental epidemiologist who has demonstrated exceptional integrity in the face of pressure from special interests, and the Best Environmental Epidemiology Paper Award. More information about the awards and instructions to submit nominations can be found by clicking here.
