Formation of Interim North American ISEE Chapter

The value of forming a North American ISEE chapter has been a subject of great interest over the past several years and the ISEE Executive Council had planned on having a wider discussion of this topic at the Ottawa ISEE conference. However, the rapidly changing policy landscape in the United States is leading the ISEE Executive Council to accelerate the establishment of an interim North America chapter that will respond to and take action(s) to address the damaging policy positions recently adopted by the US Environmental Protection Agency. It is the ISEE Executive Council’s expectation that a formation of an interim North American chapter will meet the needs to mobilize a concerted response addressing time-urgent policy issues. A final decision regarding establishment of a permanent North American chapter will be made in Ottawa after consultation with ISEE members in North America. Contact secretariat@iseepi.org if you want to get involved with the interim chapter.

Short Course on Environmental Exposure Assessment on June 18-22, 2018 in Gurgaon, India

Over 90% of pollution-related deaths occur in low and middle-income countries (LMICs). Despite this burden, capacity in LMICs to research the health effects of environmental exposures is often limited by several factors, including lack of training in environmental exposure assessment.

The ISEE Capacity Building and Education Committee (CAPE) aims to help bridge this gap by increasing access to training in exposure assessment for environmental epidemiology in LMICs. ISEE will sponsor a short course on this topic, run for the first time, June 18-22, 2018 in Gurgaon, India in partnership with the Public Health Foundation of India and the Centre for Chronic Disease Control. The introductory course will cover basic principles and current developments as well as specific topics including water contamination, pesticides, air pollution, biomonitoring, and thermal stress.

“My sense is that opportunities for training in epidemiology are increasing in India but training in exposure assessment remains an important bottleneck for environmental epidemiology research”, says Cathryn Tonne from the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) and coordinator of the short course. Tonne will be joined by Laura Beane-Freeman, US National Cancer Institute, Miranda Loh, Institute of Occupational Medicine, and Vidhya Venugopa, Sri Ramachandra University as teaching faculty.

For those unable to attend in-person, recorded lectures will be available online through the ISEE Global Education Channel on YouTube. We hope to bring the course to other locations in collaboration with ISEE regional chapters and local institutions in the future!

Update from the 3rd Early Career Researchers Conference on Environmental Epidemiology

Approximately 150 young researchers participated in the 3rd Early Career Researchers Conference on Environmental Epidemiology on March 19-20, 2018 in Freising, Germany. Hosted by the Institute for Epidemiology at the Helmholtz Zentrum München, the conference held a panel discussion on "Communicating Science - Well Performed Risk Communication" moderated by Brigitte Strahwald and including Francesco Forastiere from Rome, Italy; Mark Nieuwenhuijsen from Barcelona, Spain; Annette Peters from Munich, Germany; and Beate Ritz from Los Angeles, USA. The quality of the science presented was excellent and several people were recognized with awards including Anke Hüls and Nina Iszatt for best abstract, as well as Aina Roca-Barcelo and Anitha Pitchika for best posters. ISEE provided travel support awards and free 1-year memberships for five young researchers. We are very grateful to the local organizing committee, especially Drs. Bénédicte Jacquemin, Massimo Stafoggia, and Alexandra Schneider, as well as the Student New Researcher Network for all their efforts. We would also like to thank Occupational and Environmental Medicine (OEM) for sponsoring the abstracts which can be downloaded here. The plenary sessions and the panel discussion were recorded and are now available on YouTube. To download a complete set of recordings from the ISEE European Chapter click here.
