The International Society for Environmental Epidemiology (ISEE) is a scientific society with membership drawn from more than 60 countries dedicated to environmental epidemiology that impacts research, training and policy worldwide. It provides a forum to foster epidemiological studies on the effects of environmental exposures in people, stimulate communication between health professionals, promote methodological advances, and strengthen environmental health policy.

The ISEE Fellow designation provides recognition of long-term ISEE members in their achievements as environmental epidemiologists impacting research, training, community engagement, translation or policy. Members who are selected to be ISEE fellows may add ’ISEE-Fellow‘ after their name. This designation reflects the valuable service rendered by the applicant to the Society and the Council and their standing in the field as recognized by their peers at ISEE. Fellows engage in activities that contribute to advancing the mission of ISEE in its effort to address new and continuing challenges to public and environmental health in a rapidly changing world at the local, national or international level.

Explore how to become an ISEE Fellow

Who can be a fellow?
Fellow is the highest grade of membership and is designated for those who have a significant level of experience in environmental health, particularly in environmental epidemiology. Anyone who is a current ISEE regular member and has been a member for a total of 5 years or more (even if not continuously) is eligible to apply if he/she meets the following requirements.

The ISEE-Fellow status is a recognition for achieving demonstrable professional excellence by engaging in activities that contribute to advancing the mission of ISEE in its effort to address new and continuing challenges to public and environmental health in the rapidly changing world at local, national or international level.

How do I apply?

  • Complete the ISEE Fellow application form online.
  • Submit your updated CV.
  • Submit a supporting statement of 300-500 words detailing why you are qualified for the ISEE-Fellow status, including listing of the contributions to the mission of ISEE and the field.

Please note that your membership status must be active at the time of application.

Which Criteria Are Used to Evaluate ISEE-Fellow Applications? The following criteria may be considered for transfer to ISEE Fellow.

  • Record of at least five years of independent work related to public health, environmental epidemiology, or other environmental area including research, teaching, auditing, community engagement, administration, or management.
  • Evidence of significant contributions to the field that is reflected in scholarly achievements, such as publications in peer-reviewed journals; funded research projects; chairing symposia in ISEE annual conferences; development of curricula for undergraduate or postgraduate environmental epidemiology or related courses; supervision of students or workers in environmental health or environmental epidemiology practice.
  • Evidence of a strong and sustained commitment to the ISEE which can be demonstrated in a variety of ways such as having held elected office in the Secretariat; serving as a Treasurer, Council member; member of a Committee or Chapter; ISEE Conference organizer; performing review of abstracts for the conferences.
  • Any additional criteria that reflects the commitment of the applicant to the ISEE that has an impact furthering the goals of ISEE as stated above.

What happens once I become an ISEE Fellow?

  • We encourage all fellows to display their fellow status as an additional title in their email signature, slide presentations, documents, etc. We suggest using the “ISEE-Fellow” abbreviation. For instance, you may want to display it as follows:
    • Mary Smith, PhD, ISEE-Fellow
    • Ippei Nakayama, MD, MPH, ISEE-Fellow
Displaying your fellow status shows peer-recognition of your outstanding contributions to environmental health sciences, as well as your deep involvement in ISEE. It also helps ISEE to be visible to many more scientists worldwide.
  • You will be honored in an induction ceremony held annually at the ISEE conference. ISEE will widely publicize the new fellows and prepare spotlights to showcase their contributions to environmental epidemiology.
  • You will be an ISEE Fellow as long as you remain an active member of ISEE. ISEE Fellows whose membership has not been renewed for three years will be transferred out of the ISEE Fellow status. To reobtain their status, former ISEE fellow will need to reapply and undergo a full review.
